Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun in our solar system. It is named after Mars, the Roman god of war (Ares in Greek mythology). Mars has also earned the nickname "The Red Planet" due to the reddish appearance it has when seen from Earth at night. Mars has two moons, Phobos and Deimos; both are small and oddly-shaped, and are possibly captured asteroids.

Mars Mission

1) History shows that the space program will only get substantial funding if it fits the political agenda of the leader in power.

2) A lot of the ability to get actual funding for projects depends on how dynamic that leader is that wants to actually do the mission.

Best bet in my mind is to get one of the parties to utilize/push/legitimize the Mars mission as, first, a way to rebound peacefully from the "Era of Terror" foisted on us by our current leaders. And, second, as a way to maintain our space superiority over our new competitors for global dominance, the Chinese. This second option might so closely parallel our space race with USSR in the early to middle 60's that it might work.

RATIONALES

Dear Dan,

very interesting and eloquent insight.

I agree the current War on Terror does not fit well with a large scale Space program focused on Mars.
